ReconAfrica flowed natural gas to the surface at its Kavango West 1X well in Namibia, marking the first hydrocarbons ever produced to surface onshore the country.
ReconAfrica tested the three lowest zones in the Elandshoek formation together with partners BW Energy, which holds a 20% working interest, and NAMCOR, which holds a 10% carried working interest. The uppermost of the three zones produced gas to surface on three separate flow tests. Crews collected samples for compositional analysis, with results due in coming weeks, while the rest of the produced hydrocarbons were flared at surface.
Testing equipment is now moving uphole to three zones in the shallower Huttenberg formation, which spans 182 m of reservoir section, including 76 net m of hydrocarbon pay identified on well logs. Each zone is expected to take up to 10 days to test, with the next update due by late August.
Brian Reinsborough, ReconAfrica's president and CEO, said the operations team is evaluating a horizontal or deviated sidetrack from the wellbore to reach a larger reservoir interval and the structure's natural fracture network, which could improve productivity based on similar reservoirs elsewhere.
The flow result adds to a short run of upstream news as ReconAfrica works to confirm what the well can produce onshore Namibia.
