Eni's 120 MW gas power plant produced first industrial electricity in Kazakhstan's Mangystau region, the company said, putting the wider hybrid power project it is building with KazMunayGas into its final construction stretch. Eni describes the project as the country's first large-scale hybrid power plant. The gas unit is one part of the 247 MW Mangystau Hybrid Power Plant, developed by Eni, KazMunayGas and Eni's subsidiary Plenitude to combine solar, gas and wind generation on one site.

The plant is being built in three stages, and two are now running. A 50 MW solar plant was commissioned in September 2025. The gas plant reached first industrial electricity in July 2026, with final commissioning of that unit due within the third quarter of 2026. The last piece, a 77 MW wind plant, is planned to start operating in 2027, completing the site's solar, gas and wind configuration.

Power for KazMunayGas's own operations

Eni said the plant is meant to give KazMunayGas subsidiaries in the Mangystau region decarbonized, reliable electricity, while helping diversify and modernize Kazakhstan's wider energy system. Eni described the project as built on a long-standing partnership with KazMunayGas.

Two million hours, no lost-time injury

Eni also reported the project's safety record: more than 2 million man-hours worked between the start of construction and first electricity from the gas plant without a Lost Time Injury, a measure that tracks incidents serious enough to keep a worker off the job. Eni attributed the record to project execution and coordination with local stakeholders.

A second line of business in Kazakhstan

Eni has worked in Kazakhstan since 1992 through exploration and production, and its position there has mostly been measured in equity stakes: 29.25% as co-operator of the Karachaganak field, 16.81% in the North Caspian PSA consortium, 2% of the CPC project and 5% of the BTC project. Mangystau runs through Plenitude instead, and it extends a renewables footprint Eni already had in the country. Plenitude operates 96 MW of wind capacity at the Badamsha Wind Farms in the Aktobe region and a 50 MW solar plant at Shaulder in the Turkestan region.

What is still ahead

The hybrid plant is not finished. Eni's own schedule has the gas unit's final commissioning still to come this quarter, and the 77 MW wind plant that completes the three-source design is not due until 2027. Until then, the plant is running on solar power and a gas unit that has reached first output, not full service.
