The selling point of the new Equinor and Eneco contract is not only volume. It is the paperwork that travels with the gas. Equinor and Eneco have signed a five-year agreement for natural gas deliveries of around 9 TWh a year, roughly 0.9 billion cubic meters, into the Dutch gas grid. Deliveries started on 1 October 2026. Commercial terms are confidential between the parties.
What the contract covers
The gas comes from the Norwegian continental shelf. Equinor describes production and pipeline transport there as having a comparatively low greenhouse gas footprint among the gas sources supplied to Europe.
Alongside the molecules, Equinor will transfer verified environmental attributes to Eneco through the digital platform run by Attributes SA. That platform tracks Equinor's emissions data independently for Eneco, using data reported to and published by Norwegian authorities.
The emissions claim and how it is built
Equinor puts the footprint of the gas under this contract at 11.8% lower than the average for gas supplied through the Dutch grid. The figure rests on total lifecycle emissions covering extraction, transport and combustion. It uses emission factors from CO2-emissiefactoren.nl, which Equinor calls the Dutch standard for CO2 calculations. Royal Haskoning performs the underlying lifecycle calculations for natural gas.
The comparison between the Dutch gas mix and Equinor's gas is set annually, and the current one is based on 2025. Emissions at the point of consumption are the same for both. The gap sits in extraction and transport of the Norwegian gas.
Third deal this year
Helle Østergaard Kristiansen, Equinor's senior vice president for Gas & Power, said this is the third long-term agreement Equinor has signed with Eneco this year. She said the gas under all three includes verified attributes through the Attributes platform, giving documented data on its origin and upstream footprint. In her view, major European energy companies value Norwegian gas for its reliability and comparatively low emissions.
Selina Thurer, Board Member Customers at Eneco, said many households and small businesses will keep relying on natural gas as part of their energy supply. Under this agreement, Eneco will supply all of its residential and small business customers in the Netherlands with Norwegian gas.
