Malawi has commissioned its first standalone utility-scale battery storage system, a 20 MW/40 MWh plant in Kanengo, on the outskirts of Lilongwe. The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) built the project with the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, which backed it with a $20 million catalytic grant. The commissioning ceremony, held July 24, was presided over by Hon. Dr. Jean Mathanga, Malawi's Minister of Energy.
A battery energy storage system stores power, often from solar or wind, and releases it when generation drops or demand rises. Malawi's grid has struggled with instability, heavy curtailment of renewable power, dependence on hydropower, and costly diesel backup generation. The Kanengo plant is meant to fix that by storing surplus power and smoothing out swings on the power grid, which ESCOM says unlocks about 100 MW of renewable generation that was previously stranded. The utility also expects the plant to cut over 10,000 tons of carbon emissions a year.
"It marks the moment Malawi's grid became smarter, stronger, and future-ready," said Eng. William Kayipa, ESCOM's chief executive. He said the plant supports ESCOM's push toward its target of 70% electricity access by 2030.
Part of a wider push across Africa
The Kanengo plant is the first project under the Global Energy Alliance's Grids of the Future program and belongs to its BESS Consortium, an initiative to scale battery storage across low- and middle-income countries. It also anchors a new Southern Africa BESS Centre of Excellence at Mzuzu University, meant to build regional skills in battery storage.
"This is the Global Energy Alliance's biggest BESS milestone in Africa to date," said Woochong Um, the Alliance's chief executive. Carol Koech, the Alliance's vice president for Africa, said the plant gives hospitals, schools, businesses, and homes reliable power without the noise and fumes of diesel generators. "The rest of the continent is watching," she said.
The project falls under Malawi's National Energy Compact, part of the broader Mission 300 effort, and is meant to open a new revenue stream for Malawi through ancillary grid services as the region adds more renewable capacity.
