Saipem won an engineering services contract from Profertil S.A. for the expansion of Profertil's fertilizer production complex in Argentina. The company describes the project as a strategic initiative meant to increase Argentina's national urea production capacity and support the country's agricultural supply chain.
The expansion centers on a new urea plant with a production capacity of 4,450 tonnes per day. The added output is meant to help meet growing fertilizer demand in Argentina and the wider regional market. Urea is a nitrogen-based fertilizer widely used in agriculture, so more production capacity means more supply available to farmers in the region.
Saipem will carry out the work in partnership with Techint Engineering & Construction, combining what the two companies describe as complementary expertise. Saipem's scope covers technical services, preparation of the Licensors' Design Packages, and a structured proposal covering the project's later development phases. The contract runs for 11 months.
Technology stack
The plant will combine three technologies: Topsoe's ammonia production technology, Saipem's own proprietary urea production technology, and Thyssenkrupp Uhde's granulation technology.
