Baltic Power, the first offshore wind farm under construction in Poland, has sent its first offshore wind power to the country's national grid. Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) confirmed it received the electricity at an onshore substation near Choczewo, after the farm's turbines passed the required tests.

Baltic Power is a joint venture of ORLEN and Northland Power. More than 50 of the farm's planned 76 turbines are installed, and the offshore installation campaign is now more than 80 percent complete. The full installation campaign is scheduled to finish later this year.

'This is not the final stage of the project,' said Maciej Stryjecki, CEO of Baltic Power, calling the milestone 'a moment of pride for all of us.'

What 'First Power' means

The milestone is known as 'First Power': the start of generation from the farm's first turbine. It is a sequential process, with further turbines brought online one at a time until the farm reaches its full installed capacity of approximately 1.2 GW.

Jens Poulsen, Project Director and Member of the Management Board at Baltic Power, said 'delivering the first power to the national grid is a key test.' He called it 'another milestone for Baltic Power, paving the way for the Polish offshore wind industry.'

Turbines and grid connection

The farm will use 76 Vestas turbines, each rated at 15 MW, the largest model available from European manufacturers. Baltic Power is among the first two wind farms in the world installing turbines of this type.

Internal cables connect the turbines to two offshore substations, where voltage is stepped up to 230 kV to cut transmission losses. Export cables then carry the power to the onshore substation at Choczewo, where it is transformed to 400 kV for connection to the PSE grid. The project's cable lines total more than 350 km.

Grzegorz Onichimowski, President of PSE, said the grid work involved 'using funds from the National Recovery Plan to develop the infrastructure of the future.'

Vessels, crew and the shore base

The Baltic Power service base in Leba has operated since spring 2025, supporting construction and set to become the farm's service and maintenance center for its planned 30-year lifespan. The base's Offshore Coordination Center runs 24 hours a day, overseeing maritime traffic around the farm. More than 100 vessels and over 5,300 crew members and contractors have taken part in the installation campaign, with up to 20 vessels working daily inside the farm's 130 km2 area, located about 23 km off the coast near Choczewo and Leba.

Next: licensing in the second half of 2026

Once installation and commissioning finish, the farm's infrastructure must pass inspections, obtain operating permits and complete certification by an independent auditor. The final step is a license from the Energy Regulatory Office to produce and sell power, a process set for the second half of 2026.
