The Bureau of Land Management opened a 30-day public scoping period on 54 oil and gas parcels covering 58,601 acres in Utah that could be included in a March 2027 lease sale. The agency is taking public comments on the parcels through Oct. 19, 2026.

Leasing is the first step toward developing federal oil and gas resources. Before any well can be drilled, an operator has to file an application for permit to drill that lays out its development plans. The BLM reviews each application, posts it for public review, runs an environmental analysis, and coordinates with state partners and other stakeholders.

Every parcel included in a lease sale carries stipulations meant to protect natural resources on the land.

The BLM has posted the parcel list, maps, and instructions for submitting comments on its ePlanning website. Information on current and upcoming lease sales is available through the National Fluid Lease Sale System, and BLM auctions are held online through Efficient Markets.

Why it matters

This is an early step, not a final decision: none of the 58,601 acres are guaranteed to reach the March 2027 auction, and the scoping period is where operators and other commenters can push to add or drop parcels. For companies tracking Utah acreage, the Oct. 19, 2026 comment deadline is the next checkpoint before the BLM finalizes what goes up for sale.
