Cheniere Energy reached substantial completion on Corpus Christi Liquefaction Stage 3 on August 28, when engineering, procurement and construction contractor Bechtel Energy handed over care, custody and control of the project's seventh and final train. The expansion adds more than 20% to Cheniere's LNG production capacity, bringing the total to about 56 million tonnes per annum. Cheniere issued full notice to proceed on the project to Bechtel in June 2022, and the first train produced its first LNG in December 2024.
5,000th cargo
Cheniere also marked the loading of its 5,000th LNG cargo, the Yari LNG carrier, which departed Sabine Pass on August 29 bound for Asia. The company reached that mark faster than any other LNG producer worldwide. Since its first cargo in 2016, Cheniere has supplied more than 340 million tonnes of LNG to markets worldwide, and its production platform now represents more than 10% of global LNG capacity.
What Fusco said
Fusco described the Corpus Christi completion as another project delivered "safely, on budget and ahead of schedule" with Bechtel. On the cargo count, he said reaching 5,000 came "just 10 years after our first cargo."
The Gulf Coast platform
The expansion sits within Cheniere's two liquefaction complexes on the U.S. Gulf Coast: Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi. Combined, the two facilities now have about 56 mtpa of production capacity in operation, with roughly 5 mtpa more under construction. Cheniere Energy is a full-service LNG provider, handling gas procurement and transportation, liquefaction, vessel chartering, and LNG delivery, and is headquartered in Houston with additional offices in London, Singapore, Beijing, Tokyo, Dubai and Washington, D.C.
