Constellation Technology Ventures, the venture arm of Constellation, has taken a strategic equity stake in Blue Energy, a company that designs prefabricated nuclear power plants built around project financing. The deal is the venture arm's first investment in a U.S. developer of small modular reactors, or SMRs. Constellation describes itself as the nation's largest producer of clean energy and the operator of the largest fleet of nuclear power plants in the United States.

A shipyard approach to building reactors

Blue Energy's model manufactures reactor components the way a shipyard builds ships, then pairs that manufacturing process with project financing built around reactor technology that already works. The company says the goal is to make new nuclear development predictable, faster and more affordable. Its assembly process uses large-format robotic prefabrication techniques adapted from offshore oil and gas and LNG construction, and Blue Energy says the aim is to make project financing available to the nuclear sector for the first time and shorten how long deployment takes. The company frames this as a response to a persistent industry problem: financing and building new nuclear generation fast enough to match rising demand for power.

What the executives said

Blue Energy CEO and co-founder Jake Jurewicz said the Constellation investment will help the company meet rising near-term power demand by making new nuclear projects predictable, scalable and financeable. He said the relationship gives Blue Energy access to an established operator and proven reactor technology, and argued that "the future of nuclear energy isn't a decade away."

David Dardis, Constellation's senior executive vice president and chief external affairs and growth officer, said Constellation is focused on pathways that speed the deployment of advanced nuclear technology while working to "allocate risk appropriately." Dardis said the investment backs Blue Energy's plans to build GE Vernova Hitachi's BWRX-300 reactor, which he called "a proven technology with a potential path to scale."

Funding, a licensing win and a Texas site

The equity stake follows a run of funding and regulatory progress at Blue Energy. Earlier this year, the company raised $380 million and struck a strategic partnership with GE Vernova to build a multi-gigawatt project that combines GE Vernova gas turbines with BWRX-300 small modular reactors in a gas-to-nuclear design. Blue Energy also secured a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing milestone, which it says supports a goal of delivering power within 48 months by phasing gas turbines and nuclear reactors into the same project. Blue Energy could start early site work on its first planned project, located in Texas, in 2026, working toward a final investment decision in 2027.
