EirGrid, the operator and developer of Ireland's electricity grid, has opened a public consultation on the North Wicklow Reinforcement Project. The consultation runs from Tuesday, October 20, to Friday, December 11.
The project would build a new 220 kV substation and a new 110 kV substation in the Greystones, Delgany and Kilpedder area, along with cables linking the two stations. It forms part of EirGrid's Powering Up Wicklow programme, which aims to upgrade and strengthen key electricity infrastructure in County Wicklow and surrounding areas.
Why EirGrid says the work is needed
EirGrid says existing electricity infrastructure in Wicklow is at risk of reaching its capacity limit. The reinforcement is meant to leave enough capacity for future growth in demand from residential and commercial developments, and from the electrification of heating and transport. EirGrid also says the programme will help make Ireland renewable ready.
Site options so far
EirGrid says it researches routes and technology options, taking account of the local landscape, environment and cultural heritage. After a Multi Criteria Assessment, it has identified two potential zones for the 220 kV substation and one potential zone for the 110 kV substation.
How to take part
The consultation follows EirGrid's six-step approach to grid development. Information events will be held in Greystones and Kilcoole. Details on how to take part are at www.eirgrid.ie/wicklow.
Liz Dillon, EirGrid's Senior Lead Community Liaison Officer for Wicklow, urged residents of the North Wicklow area to get involved and "have their say". She said EirGrid recognizes the role communities play in supporting its work, and the value of local knowledge.
