Encavis has signed its first hybrid power purchase agreement (PPA) in Spain that combines solar and wind output. The buyer is Spanish energy company Visalia, and the contract runs three and a half years.
Encavis will deliver 60 GWh of renewable electricity a year from its 199 MW Aragon portfolio near Zaragoza. Two solar parks and three wind farms supply the power. Pairing the two technologies is meant to give a steadier supply across different times of the day and year, because solar and wind generate on different profiles.
What Visalia is buying and why
Visalia describes itself as an independent energy and telecommunications infrastructure operator. It runs more than 500 urban renewable generation facilities and over 1,000 km of electricity distribution and high-speed fibre-optic networks.
Alejandro Tejero-Garcés, Visalia's managing director, said the deal supports supply to residential customers, homeowners' associations and small and mid-sized businesses. Visalia generates solar power locally in what it calls solar neighbourhoods (barrios solares). Wind power from Encavis lets it "complement our energy supply at night," he said.
Encavis in Spain
Spain is one of Encavis' key European markets, with 1 GW of operational solar and wind capacity. That includes the Talayuela solar park at 300 MW and La Cabrera at 200 MW. Both were among the first utility-scale solar parks in Europe built and run without public subsidies. The Aragon wind farm, at 150 MW, is also in the portfolio.
Encavis recently opened an office in Madrid. The company says it supports customer and origination activities across Southern Europe.
Mario Schirru, Encavis CEO, said combining wind and solar with power structuring lets the company offer solutions that "better match their needs." Jorge Arenillas, managing director of Encavis Energy Solutions, said the company sees potential across Europe for more customer-focused products, including Full Supply products.
