The Environmental Protection Agency's Region 10 office proposed reissuing the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System general permit that covers oil and gas exploration facilities in the federal waters of Cook Inlet. EPA is taking public comment on the draft permit for 45 days, through September 21, 2026.
The draft permit would authorize exploration facilities to discharge certain pollutants into Cook Inlet's federal waters, subject to limits and requirements meant to minimize pollution and protect water quality. A fact sheet accompanying the draft permit addresses compliance with the Endangered Species Act, Essential Fish Habitat requirements, and the Paperwork Reduction Act.
EPA classified the reissuance as not a significant regulatory action, so the agency did not submit it to the Office of Management and Budget for review.
