The Bureau of Land Management has opened a 30-day public scoping period on 104 oil and gas parcels in Wyoming, covering 123,166 acres, that may be offered in a June 2027 lease sale. Scoping ends November 27, 2026.
The parcels are not yet confirmed for the sale. The BLM describes them as parcels that may be included, and the scoping period is the first chance for the public to weigh in on them.
What scoping covers
The BLM is analyzing the 104 parcels now. The parcels, maps and instructions on how to comment are posted on the agency's ePlanning website under the title 2027 June Oil and Gas Lease Sale.
The agency says every parcel included in a federal oil and gas lease sale carries stipulations to protect important natural resources.
Leasing is the first step
A lease does not authorize drilling. The BLM calls leasing the first step in developing federal oil and gas resources. Before any development operations begin, an operator has to file an application for permit to drill that lays out its development plans.
The BLM then reviews each application and posts it for public review. It also conducts an environmental analysis and coordinates with state partners and stakeholders.
Where to follow the sale
Information on current and upcoming BLM leases is available through the National Fluid Lease Sale System. BLM lease sales are held online through Efficient Markets.
The BLM manages about 245 million acres of public land, primarily in 12 western states including Alaska, and administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate nationwide.
For operators, the scoping window is the point to check the parcel list and maps against their own acreage interests before the sale is finalized.
