Lummus Technology acquired intellectual property assets and experienced personnel from Shell Catalysts & Technologies' Environmental Catalysts and Systems (ECS) business, the companies announced Aug. 6, 2026, from Houston.
The deal adds ECS's emissions-control technology and an established global customer base to Lummus' environmental solutions platform. Lummus said the assets will also augment its existing process technologies and broaden its ability to deliver end-to-end solutions across refining, petrochemicals and waste processing.
What Lummus is getting
ECS was built inside Shell Catalysts & Technologies to help industrial operators cut harmful emissions from their operations. Its product line includes DeNOx systems, designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and help customers meet tightening environmental standards while keeping plants running at full performance. NOx is the group of nitrogen-based pollutants formed during high-temperature combustion. Across its portfolio, Shell said ECS technologies can remove more than 98 to 99 percent of key pollutants in certain applications.
Why Lummus wanted it
"This acquisition immediately strengthens Lummus' emissions-control and environmental solutions while deepening our cross-industry relationships," said Leon de Bruyn, president and chief executive officer of Lummus Technology. He said the ECS customer base will help Lummus support customers "across the full lifecycle of their assets," and credited the company's long relationship with Shell Catalysts & Technologies for laying the groundwork for the transaction.
Elise H. Nowee, president of Shell Catalysts & Technologies, said the divestment keeps the ECS business "positioned for continued growth" under a company that already works with Shell in specialized catalysts.
The handover
Shell Catalysts & Technologies will keep supporting ECS's existing customers during a transition period, to keep supply and service running while the business moves to Lummus.
