Munters inaugurated an expanded data center cooling campus in Daleville, Virginia this week, adding manufacturing, training and testing space that the company says lets it produce customized cooling equipment at scale. The site now covers 565,000 square feet (52,000 square meters) and employs close to 600 people.
The Daleville campus is the largest of five dedicated manufacturing facilities within Munters' Data Center Technologies business area worldwide. It produces the full range of Munters' data center cooling portfolio:
- Air side economizers
- The patented SyCool Split
- CRAHs (computer room air handling units)
- Fan coil arrays
- CDUs (coolant distribution units)
- Chillers, added with this expansion
The expanded site also houses the Munters Service Academy, new production test stands and a chiller laboratory with an environmental chamber.
Stefan Aspman, president of Munters Data Center Technologies, said the growth of AI and high-performance computing is creating new demand for the energy, water and physical infrastructure that supports data centers, not just the digital infrastructure itself. He said the expansion positions the company "to deliver on our ambitious growth agenda" while meeting customer and community needs.
Frank Pellegrino, senior vice president of sales and strategy for the Data Center Technologies unit and incoming president of the business area, said manufacturing capacity is only part of the picture. He said Munters also needs skilled people, technical knowledge and service capabilities so customers' systems run "with a minimum waste of resources throughout their lifetime."
The expansion let Munters begin manufacturing chillers in Daleville, work previously done in Italy. That includes the Circlemiser chiller, which Munters says uses cylindrical condensing coils and other design elements to cut energy consumption and total required power compared with typical air-cooled chillers.
