More than 350,000 residential customers of San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) now generate their own power through rooftop solar, the utility said July 7, 2026. That is more than one in four customers, one of the highest rooftop solar adoption rates in the nation, according to SDG&E.
SDG&E, a subsidiary of Sempra (NYSE: SRE), said faster interconnections have supported the growth. Customers can now complete the interconnection process in about three days on average, after the company streamlined coordination across teams and exceeded state performance benchmarks.
"The energy system is changing because our customers are leading that change," said Scott Crider, president of SDG&E.
More customers are also pairing solar with battery storage, letting them save excess daytime generation for use later, SDG&E said. The utility said that shift is helping turn a traditionally one-way grid into one that supports two-way power flows, as customers both consume and contribute energy.
SDG&E has been named the most reliable electric utility in the West by PA Consulting for 20 consecutive years, the company said. Even with solar, it said, customers still rely on the grid when their own generation runs low. SDG&E serves 27 cities and two counties across the San Diego and southern Orange County region.
