Anthropic has agreed to a $35 billion cloud-computing deal with Lambda, an Nvidia-backed cloud provider, for a data center in Texas, according to a source familiar with the matter cited by Reuters. The project sits in Nueces County and is being built by Hut 8, a company that shifted from crypto mining into AI data centers, with about 350 megawatts of power capacity, the source said.
Anthropic, Nvidia, Hut 8 and Lambda did not immediately respond to requests from Reuters for comment outside regular business hours.
Who holds the lease
The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the deal, said Nvidia itself would hold the lease on the data center. Hut 8 said in July it had signed a lease agreement with an "investment-grade customer" for 15 years, with a base-term contract value of $19.6 billion. The Financial Times later reported that Nvidia was the tenant for Hut 8's 1-gigawatt Beacon Point campus.
Anthropic's compute buildout
Demand for computing infrastructure has surged since the introduction of generative AI services, and technology companies have committed hundreds of billions of dollars to data centers built around Nvidia chips. Anthropic, which is preparing for an initial public offering, has been expanding its computing power to meet growth it expects in products such as its Claude Code coding tool. It said last week it will spend $45 billion to rent AI cloud computing power from Nscale's West Virginia data center campus. The Lambda deal will bring online Nvidia capacity to meet growing demand for Anthropic's Claude AI, the source added.
