The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement is taking public comment on renewing an information collection tied to oil and gas drilling operations. The agency, part of the Interior Department, set a comment deadline of October 16, 2026.
BSEE uses the collection to check that a drilling unit fits the job and that the operator will not run into hazardous geologic conditions. It also uses the data to confirm that equipment stays in working order and meets safety standards, and that a drilling crew is trained to handle well-control problems. BSEE reviews well records as well, to see whether drilling has hit hydrocarbons or hydrogen sulfide gas, and to confirm that detection equipment, protective gear, and crew training are adequate in zones where H2S is present or its presence is unknown.
The information collection request covers three forms. One of them, the End of Operations Report (BSEE-0125), gives BSEE current data on wells and leasehold activity and lets the agency check compliance with approved plans and with any conditions tied to a suspension or temporary probation.
The renewal falls under the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995 and carries OMB Control Number 1014-0018. Comments can go through regulations.gov under docket BSEE-2026-0232, or by email to Kelly Odom at BSEE, who is also the contact for questions about the request.
