Samsung Heavy Industries has ordered tank designs from GTT for Delfin FLNG 1, a floating liquefied natural gas unit built for the Delfin LNG project. GTT received the order in the second quarter of 2026. Delfin FLNG 1 will be the first floating LNG unit to enter service in the United States, and the largest anywhere by expected production capacity, at 4.4 million tonnes of LNG a year.

Eight tanks, two rows

GTT will design the unit's cryogenic tanks, which together will hold 180,000 cubic meters of LNG. The eight tanks will sit in two rows and use GTT's Mark III Flex membrane containment system. A membrane system lines a vessel's hull with insulated panels to hold LNG in its liquid form, rather than relying on freestanding tanks. GTT said the Mark III Flex design suits demanding maritime and offshore work, including operation in a region exposed to hurricanes.

Delivery set for mid-2030

The floating LNG unit is scheduled for delivery in mid-2030 and will operate off the coast of Louisiana. GTT chief executive François Michel said Delfin FLNG 1 shows that "offshore LNG is entering a new phase in the United States." He said the project also shows that GTT's membrane technology can support complex offshore projects while meeting high standards for performance and safety.
