The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission opened a scoping period for the Evergy McNew Power Plant Delivery Project, a natural gas pipeline project proposed by Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline, Inc. in Reno, Harvey, and Stafford counties, Kansas.
FERC staff will prepare an environmental document covering the project's impacts. The commission will use that document to decide whether the project is in the public convenience and necessity under the Natural Gas Act. The scoping process gathers input from the public and other agencies to focus the environmental review on the most important issues.
How to comment
The commission wants written comments on the project's potential environmental effects, reasonable alternatives, and ways to avoid or lessen impacts by 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time on November 2, 2026. Commenters can file electronically through FERC's eComment or eFiling systems, or mail paper comments that reference Docket No. CP26-572-000 to the commission's offices in Washington, DC or Rockville, Maryland. Anyone who filed comments on the project before the docket opened on August 31, 2026, needs to refile them in Docket No. CP26-572-000 for them to count in this proceeding.
Eminent domain notice
Southern Star representatives may contact landowners along the project route about easements to construct, operate, and maintain the facilities. Landowners are not required to sign an agreement. If FERC approves the project, though, the Natural Gas Act gives Southern Star the right of eminent domain, and the company could start condemnation proceedings in court if a deal is not reached. Courts, not FERC, handle those cases, with compensation set by a judge under state law.
