PJM Interconnection issued a Hot Weather Alert for Aug. 9 through Aug. 11 across its Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions, forecasting peak electricity demand of up to 146,541 megawatts on Aug. 10. Temperatures are expected to approach or exceed 90 degrees with high humidity across the eastern portion of PJM's footprint, driving the higher demand.
A Hot Weather Alert is a routine procedure PJM issues ahead of forecast heat or high humidity to prepare transmission and generation staff and facilities for the expected rise in electricity demand. The procedure requires no action from customers.

Regions covered
PJM's Mid-Atlantic region covers Atlantic City Electric, Baltimore Gas and Electric, Delmarva Power & Light, Jersey Central Power & Light, Met-Ed, Penelec, PECO Energy, Pepco, PPL Electric Utilities, PSE&G, and Orange and Rockland (Rockland Electric Co). The Southern region is made up of the Dominion transmission zone.
PJM said a dedicated team of operators uses technology to balance supply and demand and direct the power grid around the clock from its control rooms. The team prepares for scenarios tied to weather, emergency conditions or equipment failure, adjusts resource output as demand shifts, and watches for unusual conditions to keep transmission lines and facilities from overloading.
