RH Petrogas' Northwest Klagagi-1 (NWK-1) well in Southwest Papua, Indonesia, flowed as much as 6.16 MMscf/d of gas and up to 192 bpd of condensate from its upper gas-bearing interval, and produced an oil rim in a lower interval that the company had not expected to find. The well was drilled by RH Petrogas' 82.65%-owned subsidiary Petrogas (Basin) as part of the company's upstream work in the Kepala Burung production sharing contract. It was designed to confirm known gas and condensate resources in the Upper Kais Formation and to test deeper potential in the Lower Kais, Sirga and Devonian basement formations.

Upper Kais tests show strong flow rates

Two drill stem tests in the Upper Kais development zone showed strong deliverability. In the lower interval, a multi-rate flow test produced about 1.6 to 2.7 MMscf/d of gas and 40 to 109 bpd of oil, with water production of 90 to 363 bpd across the tested choke conditions. RH Petrogas said the result points to a gas cap sitting above an oil rim, a combination its original well prognosis had considered unlikely.

In the upper gas-bearing interval, a six-hour flow test at a 20/64-inch choke produced about 4.2 MMscf/d of gas and 192 bpd of condensate with 20 bpd of water. A subsequent step-up test reached 6.16 MMscf/d of gas at a 26/64-inch choke.

Deeper zones came up dry

The deeper Lower Kais interval showed hydrocarbon indications while drilling but recovered only formation water on test. RH Petrogas has plugged and abandoned the exploration zone at a net cost of about $4.5 million, which it will expense in the current financial year. No hydrocarbons were found in the underlying Sirga Formation or Devonian basement, the deepest targets drilled in the well.

RH Petrogas said it will carry out further reservoir evaluation to determine a development strategy for the Northwest Klagagi field.
