SSE's 17.3 MW Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva wind farm in Puglia, southern Italy, is now operational and exporting electricity into the local grid. It is the first renewable electricity asset SSE has delivered in Italy, and its first onshore wind farm in the country.
With commercial operations reached, the site begins delivering under the long-term corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) SSE signed with Microsoft in 2024. The agreement gives the project a route to market for its output, and the electricity will support Microsoft's carbon reduction strategy. A PPA is a long-term contract to buy electricity from a new wind, solar or other clean energy project, which gives the developer predictable income to build it.
The project
The wind farm combines two sites, Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva, and has five turbines. Construction started in early 2025. About 70 construction roles were supported at the site during peak delivery, according to SSE, which says that boosted the local economy and supply chain in Puglia.
Colin Spain, Director of PPAs at SSE Renewables, said the company is delighted to reach commercial operations on its first onshore wind farm in Italy. He said teams and contractors worked safely and expertly after construction began in 2025. He added that the CPPA shows how long-term corporate offtake supports new capacity in Italy.
SSE's wider position in Italy and southern Europe
SSE describes Italy as one of its key growth markets in southern Europe. The company says it has a secured pipeline of more than 600 MW of onshore wind developments in the country.
Its operational onshore wind capacity in the region now stands at 109 MW. A further 55 MW is under construction across three sites in Spain and Italy. One of those is a 10 MW wind farm now being built in Puglia.
The Puglia project is a small first step against that 600 MW pipeline. It is also the first one of SSE's Italian assets to produce power for a named corporate buyer.
