Standard Nuclear has signed a binding agreement to supply Radiant Industries with multiple metric tons of TRISO nuclear fuel through 2031, fuel that will power Radiant's transportable Kaleidos microreactor. Standard Nuclear describes itself as a reactor-agnostic TRISO fuel producer and the only U.S. company operating TRISO fuel fabrication facilities at industrial scale.
Kaleidos is a 1-megawatt microreactor built for transport and direct deployment at a customer's site, according to Radiant. The supply deal locks in fuel deliveries for the reactor out to 2031 and gives Radiant a mix of short, medium, and long-term supply options.
TRISO fuel packages uranium fuel particles inside layers of ceramic and carbon coatings, a design intended to contain radioactive material at high temperatures without a separate reactor containment structure.
"Radiant is now deploying truly transportable, safe, and highly advanced microreactors," said Kurt Terrani, president and chief executive officer of Standard Nuclear. Terrani said the deal shows customers trust Standard Nuclear to deliver the TRISO fuel they need to deploy their power systems, and that a choice of short, medium, and long-term supply terms gives customers certainty to fuel their reactors.
Standard Nuclear said the deal advances its goal of building a domestic supply of advanced nuclear fuel through multi-year customer agreements for its U.S.-produced TRISO fuel.
