TotalEnergies has signed agreements with PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd (PCSB), PTTEP and KUFPEC to acquire a 30% operated interest in the Lang Lebah and B14 gas fields, off the coast of Sarawak, Malaysia. The company will run both fields. The plan is to develop them together as one integrated project.

What the project covers

Lang Lebah is one of Malaysia's largest offshore gas discoveries, and B14 sits nearby. Developed together, the two fields are expected to open up more than 6.5 trillion cubic feet of gas resources, equivalent to more than 1 billion barrels of oil equivalent. That gas would feed the existing Malaysia LNG liquefaction plant, with a production plateau of around 10 billion cubic meters per annum (BCMA).

Ownership after completion

The transactions are subject to regulatory approvals. Once they complete, the four partners will hold the following interests in both fields.

Partner Interest
TotalEnergies (operator) 30%
PTTEP 25%
KUFPEC 25%
PCSB 20%

TotalEnergies' rationale

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, said the development of the two fields would allow "another large-scale gas hub in Malaysia" built on shared infrastructure. He said the gas would supply Malaysia LNG and meet growing LNG demand in Asia.

Pouyanné also described the agreements as another step in the company's strategy to strengthen its integrated gas position in Malaysia. He pointed to two earlier moves: the acquisition of SapuraOMV in 2024 and the expansion of its long-standing partnership with PETRONAS in 2025.

We also reported that TotalEnergies buys 25% of 26 Chevron-operated US offshore leases.
