TotalEnergies used a meeting of Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) member companies in Abu Dhabi to set out methane emissions cooperation with national oil and gas companies in Malaysia, Angola and India. Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné tied the work to the charter's aim of near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.
A methane testing center in Southeast Asia
TotalEnergies signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and JGC Corporation. The agreement covers SEA METEC, the Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center. PETRONAS will lead it, and it will be based in Malaysia. Its job is to evaluate methane measurement and monitoring technologies across Southeast Asia.
TotalEnergies will share what it has learned over more than 10 years at its TADI (TotalEnergies Anomalies Detection Initiative) center. TADI sits at the Lacq Research and Development Center in southwestern France and is Europe's only facility dedicated to evaluating methane detection and quantification technologies.
A memorandum with SONANGOL in Angola
TotalEnergies and SONANGOL signed a Memorandum of Understanding on methane reduction and decarbonization in Angola. It builds on experience with TotalEnergies' AUSEA technology. The two companies are working on ways to cut methane emissions and flaring, improve energy efficiency, support facility electrification and advance carbon management. Financing options are also being explored, including potential support from the World Bank's Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Fund.
A second field campaign with Oil India
A first one-month campaign used AUSEA to detect and quantify methane over 20 sites operated by Oil India Limited (OIL) in Assam. It gave OIL data for its emissions reporting. A second one-month campaign will bring AUSEA to additional OIL-operated sites.
AUSEA is a drone-mounted gas analyzer developed by TotalEnergies and its R&D partners. Its dual sensor detects methane and carbon dioxide and identifies where they come from.
Pouyanné said sharing technologies, expertise and best practices can "accelerate concrete action" toward that 2030 goal.
