ConocoPhillips has picked Andy O'Brien, its chief financial officer and executive vice president for strategy and commercial matters, to become president and CEO on September 1, 2026. He replaces Ryan Lance, who is stepping down after 14 years in the top job.
O'Brien has been with the company for nearly three decades, since joining legacy Conoco in 1997. His roles there have spanned finance, planning, strategy and international assignments, including work tied to the company's LNG business. He joins the ConocoPhillips board when the appointment takes effect.
Robert Niblock, the company's lead independent director, said of O'Brien: "He is the right person to lead our company into its next phase."
Lance oversaw the company's 2012 restructuring and its $38 billion purchase of Anadarko. He moves into a different post, chairing the board on a transitional basis.
Vice president for finance and controller Konnie Haynes-Welsh moves up to senior vice president and CFO, effective the same day.
